Work Complete on New New York Gas-Fired Power Plant
The $1.58 billion plant, first proposed in 2009, will produce enough electricity to power 1 million homes.
SEATTLE (Oil Monster): Construction is complete on a new 1,100-megawatt natural gas-fired power plant in New York state between New York City and Albany, Kallanish Energy reports.
Cricket Valley Energy Center was developed by Advanced Power AG and was constructed by Bechtel in Dover, New York.
The $1.58 billion plant, first proposed in 2009, will produce enough electricity to power 1 million homes.
The combined-cycle plant uses three combustion turbines, each paired with a heat recovery steam generator and a steam turbine generator.
It also features an advanced emissions-control technology that will make it one of the most efficient power-generation facilities in the U.S.
The plant in Dutchess County is located near the Iroquois natural gas pipeline.
The nearby Indian Point nuclear power plant is scheduled to shut down in 2021.
The gas-fired plant was developed by Swiss-based Advanced Power AG. It has 7,000 megawatts in operation, construction and development in the United States and Europe. That includes two gas-fired power plants in Ohio.
The New York power plant is owned by JERSA Co., TIAA Investments, Advanced Power, BlackRock Financial Management, Development Bank of Japan and NongHyup Financial Group.
The completed plant will employ 25 workers. At peak, the project employed 1,100 construction workers.
Last November, about 30 people were arrested at the construction site during a protest against the plant by activists.
