Formed in 2005, Kentucky Frontier Gas runs dozens of little systems that have delivered natural gas to Eastern Kentucky for more than 50 years. Frontier has about 6000 customers in 13 counties - most of whom are in Breathitt, Floyd, Magoffin, and Pike Counties.Kentucky Frontier Gas LLC was formed by 3 veterans of gas utility and pipeline work. Bob Oxford, Steve Shute, and Larry Rich have 120+ years of experience in gas operations from the wellhead to pipelines to the tip of the burner. They have built and operated utilities and pipelines in more than half the states in the US Bob Oxford is a petroleum engineer with 50+ years of work in natural gas exploration and production, pipelines and other projects through his company Industrial Gas Services, Inc. Steve Shute is a registered Professional Engineer with 40+ years utility experience, including positions in engineering, corrosion control and DOT compliance, and management duties with a large regional gas company and its Rocky Mountain Natural Gas unit in western Colorado. He runs Pipeline Solutions, Inc., a consulting firm for small gas utilities such as Frontier, with projects in a dozen states coast-to-coast. He is co-owner of Pinedale Natural Gas and owns or operates several other small gas utilities.photo staff 2 Larry Rich was a regional manager for a large southeast utility and has, for over 40 years, worked on various gas pipeline and distribution projects over the US. Larry is now retired from Frontier. The remaining partners are active managers who handle the billing and accounting, rates, finance, engineering, regulatory compliance and safety operations of the business. The partners spend significant time in Eastern Kentucky In 2010 Frontier moved headquarters to the office & shop of Auxier Road Gas just north of Prestonsburg. We have eight Service Technicians operating out of this complex along with the office and billing staff. All personnel are local to the area including our accountant, Kim Branham Crisp, who is third generation with Auxier Road.
Kentucky Frontier Gas offers three classes of gas service:
Frontier will not perform installation or maintenance services on customer facilities downstream of the meter. Some health- and safety-related services are provided by Frontier free of charge to its customers. Such free services are limited to the following:
Who Does Frontier Serve?
Kentucky Frontier Gas is a new utility assembled from several older, more familiar Eastern Kentucky gas companies. Under Kentucky rules, every gas pipeline must offer gas service to any residence within .5 mile. This rule resulted in a lot of folks getting gas service from many different pipelines and small utility networks. Each gas utility has to follow pipeline safety rules from US DOT and the financial and tariff rules of the Kentucky Public Service Commission. Each utility has a billing and accounting system, managers and office staff, field workers, a 24-hour emergency response center, and written standards of service.
Gas Cost Compared With Other Fuels
Since 2001, most energy prices have risen to the highest level in history. Natural gas prices have risen, but gas is still less than other common energy sources. These are typical economics for most homes in Eastern Kentucky: A mid-size home uses about 60 MCF of gas, or 72 million BTUs per year. To compare with other fuels, use these equivalent quantities and typical prices:Propane is extracted from natural gas. The cost per BTU must stay higher or no propane is made. The cost of truck delivery is also higher than by gas pipeline. The all-electric house has been marketed for decades even though the cost has always been much higher than natural gas. Thats because most electricity is generated by coal-fired plants, where conversion is only 30% efficient. This means 70% of the heat from coal is wasted as heat out the smokestack and cooling towers. Electric heat pumps are more efficient than electric heaters*, but the heat pump needs a water source to exchange enough heat for Kentucky winters. The furnace output at 88°F doesnt feel "warm" like a gas furnace and the heat pump lasts about 1/2 as long. Over the entire life cycle, electric heat costs much more. For these reasons all-electric homes sometimes suffer on resale value because of the heating choice. Renewable energies like hydro, biomass, wind, and solar are good, but are still a tiny fraction of our total energy use. Nuclear energy produces about 8% of US energy but no new plants have been built in 30 years. Electric heat still mostly comes from coal and natural gas is much cheaper and cleaner.
